Erin Hession – Indiana

Erin Hession’s mission statement on her website is to make every wedding, event and portrait session special. Some may say this isn’t an easy task when you have been photographing weddings for as many years as Erin has but looking through her work on her website & her blog you’ll find she does a brilliant job at keeping her photography both fresh & new and at a very high, professional standard.

Have a read below to see how Erin stays motivated & creative:

How do you keep yourself motivated & your photography fresh?

I keep myself motivated and my work fresh by reading magazines like Studio Photography & Design, checking out other photographer’s blogs and websites for inspiration
everyday and attending WPPI’s convention in Vegas. It really opened up my eyes to see what other photographers in other markets were doing for their
clients and after coming back from Vegas, creating a new blog and changing our work flow a bit, our phone has been
ringing off the hook!

What (or who) has inspired, & continues to inspire, your work?

From a business standpoint, I would have to say that Gary Fong (who photographed my 2003 wedding before he retired!) and David Jay are the most influential
people I’ve been following throughout the years from the business
perspective. Jessica Claire is definitely my inspiration though when it
comes to overall style of work, she’s amazing!

How important is the post-processing stage in your final images?

Post processing is important but it’s not the be all, end all. I think you need a
well lit, perfectly composed image to start with and photoshop should just
enhance it that much more.

Show us your favorite image that you’ve shot so far this year & tell us
what it is about this image that makes it special to you.

I think most people would look at this and say, “Why did she take
a photo of someone’s sunglasses?” but this image goes way beyond that. We
were shooting in Mexico a few weeks ago and throughout the trip, we stopped
to photograph interesting architecture and some of the poor, run down
downtown areas that are so unbelievable that you think “I can’t believe I
just photographed that!” One day we ventured out to Las Caletas island where
it was so incredibly hot and humid. My husband and I were about to head back
to the boat after the outing was over and he had his sunglasses hanging off
of his shirt. My eyes immediately went to the reflection within the
sunglasses. It was the most beautiful scenery ever with the palm trees, blue
skies and ocean reflecting back at me. I grabbed the shot real quick and
later pulled it up on our computer…of all of the shots we took that week,
that was one of my favorites!
