Richard McDowell & Amy Sayers of Red Leaf Studios capture “life, love, and the unspoken connection between couples”… by no means an easy task but they succeed superbly with their emotive & captivating photography. We are very pleased to be featuring some of their work on Don’t Box Us In but to view more of their breathtaking images please visit their website or blog.

How do you keep yourself motivated & your photography fresh?

We are active members on a few wedding photography forums, which keeps us in touch with an international photography community. We are both very inspired by the simplicity and beauty of the prairies, by taking the time to walk the locations prior to shooting, we envision our images and inspire ourselves by the surroundings.

What (or who) has inspired, & continues to inspire, your work?

Richard: I am continually inspired by the photography of Parker Pfister and Mark Tucker. For me Parker Pfister is the quintessential wedding photographer, who’s work is always evolutionary. Mark Tucker’s work always tells a wonderful story that grasps the viewers attention.

Amy: Jose Villa, for the simplistic beauty of his images. Elliott Erwitt’s images not only have great lighting and mood, but have a style unlike any other. He had an amazing ability, in that he could capture everyday events, and make them look like beautiful works of art.

How important is the post-processing stage in your final images?

Post-processing is very important to us, as it defines our style. We have always followed the philosophy that Photoshop should only be used to enhance our images, not create them.

Show us your favorite image that you’ve shot so far this year & tell us what it is about this image that makes it special to you.

Our favorite image is the elusive next great image that we have not yet captured.

If you were planning on having a photo-shoot, who would you want to photograph your portrait & why?

Richard & Amy: Mark Tucker, for his depth, his imagination, and distinctive work.
